About

Ko Maia Hegglun toku ingoa.

I was born in Taranaki and grew up between there and Te Matau-a-Māui/Hawke’s Bay. My father was a bone/stone carver and healer, and from my childhood I was fascinated with the process of working with stone, bone, and wood. I’ve been working with my hands since I was able to hold things. My tipuna come from all corners of the world, including Te Tai Tokerau Aotearoa.

My view is that art should be accessible to everyone. You shouldn’t need a degree to appreciate something beautiful, but for people who look more intently, they will find more than they expect with my work. Art is a vehicle for storytelling, the inquisitive observation of art will improve ones art of observation. Like any artist, my work is a reflection of how I see life.

Every aspect of my works are carefully considered to reinforce the kaupapa. Each piece represents an authentic journey of connection and discovery. I meet a place or material and we both come away changed.

Working in the building industry for over 20 years, I have honed the practical skills needed for large building projects and I found they were readily transferable in public art works.

I prefer commissioned work, as I find it inspiring to create something with a specific person or place in mind.
